Always show menu bar items in Ubuntu 14.04 Unity

Turns out this is pretty easy to accomplish with our friend gsettings.

I have a Dell Latitude E7240 so I'm holding it back to the last Dell "supported" version, which happens to Ubuntu 14.04. I heard it was easy to get your menu bar's items to always show in 16.04 so had to find a way to do it in the version I'm running. It is indeed pretty easy...

Just run this command on Ubuntu 14.04 to always show menu items:

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity always-show

In Ubuntu 15.04+ this is even easier, just go to Settings > Appearance > Menu Visibility.

It's kind of funny how with a few tweaks, Ubuntu's Unity starts to look a lot like Mac OS X...
